The Opportunity

This position is a unique opportunity for you to join an innovative, fast-growing organization and become an integral part of their future success. Reporting directly to the CEO, you will be charged with taking the Star design practice to the next level of growth. Building on a strong foundation of 75+ world-class designers across five studios, your objective will be to significantly scale our design practice, in our pursuit of our vision to build impactful futures through design-led technology innovation.

The Person

Must have:

  • 10+ years of recent work experience in design agency leadership role
  • Deeply familiar with professional services delivery operations, incl best practices for design/creative services
  • Track record of meeting/exceeding financial performance targets of company, business unit, or department
  • Directly managed global design agency/business unit revenues in excess of $25M + in annual revenue, and comfortable building a $100M run rate business
  • Experience hiring and leading teams globally, with proven track record of hiring, managing and developing high-performance design leadership and commercial roles
  • Multicultural mindset, with experience from Asia, Europe and North America

Should have:

  • Inherent understanding of design disciplines across product, service, business and brand design
  • Be committed to traveling 60-90 days per year
  • Practitioner of the Challenger Sale approach – offers unique perspectives, knows customer value drivers, and takes control of the customer conversation
  • Past/recent role in sales/BD as individual contributor, and as a leader building teams
  • Experience setting up new studio locations globally
  • Experience in finding, progressing and closing million-dollar customer deals
  • Deep expertise within one or more of our existing Industries Practices – Automotive & Mobility, AdTech & MarTech, Health & Wellness, Consumer/Industrial IoT, Consumer Electronics, and Fintech

Could have:

  • Experience (academic and/or professional) as designer
  • Multilingual experience (in addition to English)
  • Experience in integrating teams acquired through M&A
  • Experience building new Industry Practices (verticals) and Services Practices (horizontal areas of expertise)

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for design practice as business unit, incl all financial, commercial, and operational KPIs
  • Define and execute on design practice growth strategy, resulting in 50-75% annual growth over the next decade
  • Liaise with Chief Sales Officer and Chief Marketing Officer to plan and execute on commercial programs to fuel design practice growth
  • Recruit and lead team of Design Directors (studio leads) and Design Sales Directors (commercial leads), as well as operational leadership roles within the design practice
  • Partner with Chief Technology Officer and the broader technology practice to ensure a unified end-to-end offering and delivery across the design and technology practices
  • Contribute to landing key accounts globally – leveraging existing relationships, overseeing BD/sales/pre-sales efforts, participating in strategy workshops, delivering proposal and pitch presentations, and deal structuring and negotiation
  • Establish and implement performance measures, designed to track and report progress against the global design strategy
  • Implement best practices for design process, tools, and methodologies, ensuring a strong global baseline and shared foundation, while giving studios the freedom to create and adopt practices that suit their particular needs
  • Build a strong culture of design, and be an internal thought leader and champion of the role and value of design in technology innovation
  • Enable collaboration and cross-pollination across all global design studios, ensuring that they can operate and thrive independently, yet feel and act as part of a global design team
  • Explore M&A targets to fuel inorganic growth of 10-20% annually
  • Own executive and board-level reporting on design practice performance activities
