Enhancing BMW’s
Cloud Data Hub
with data visualization

Overview

Few brands carry as much prestige and recognition of quality as BMW. To craft the automotive experience of the future, you have to think beyond the four doors and shift your attention to the digital world. BMW’s current mission is to build a next-generation mobility company with reimagined vehicles, solutions and user experiences.

Behind breakthrough technologies such as autonomous driving, electric vehicles and in-car smart assistants that are redefining mobility is a truly staggering amount of data.

How do you analyze and visualize petabytes of data and data insights coming in from millions of different sensors, production sites and plans? How do you create a useful, intuitive tool that improves how you interact with and what you can do with Big Data?

Counting on the quality of our previous successful collaboration, BMW connected with Star again to get the job done.

  • Created a new drag-and-drop data visualization platform adapted to the needs of technical and non-technical users
  • Integrates into BMW’s cloud platform
  • Synthesizes and visualizes data from millions of different sensors and connected devices
  • Delivered a highly complex technical solution in under six months

Idea

This project is part of BMW’s overall digital transformation in data management and processing.

They needed a partner to help them develop a solution that could help their employees create analytics, infographics and other visualizations from vast amounts of available data inside the company. The solution would be for BMW’s internal use only and focus on significantly reducing the effort to create meaningful and easy-to-understand metrics that could be used to craft new initiatives and drive stakeholder support. Importantly, it would also need to attract new user groups from non-technical parts of the company to increase the adoption rate of BMW’s cloud platform.

Competition in the Automotive industry is fierce, with bold ideas driving new leadership. So, they needed a partner who could help them move quickly, handle complex data and infrastructural challenges and deliver a user-centric, intuitive toolset.

Project

BMW selected Star because we could provide a highly qualified full-stack team, including UX/UI, software engineers, DevOps, QA, PM and product managers. They were counting on our strong expertise in AWS cloud services (serverless and orchestration of services), product definition and UX to help them design and engineer the breakthrough new platform.

BMW gave us the responsibility of shaping the product and aligning it with the internal stakeholder vision. One central challenge was that we had to build an environment based on BMW’s specifications to fit into the existing infrastructure and architecture while balancing constraints from other nearby products.

Effectively, we had to thread a very complex needle with no room for error. Rallying around the challenging goals, we solved complex challenges and delivered a micro front-end Cloud Data Hub user interface and all required backend components, services and configurations. In addition, we helped improve the existing BMW platform’s data flow and authorization concepts.

Our dedication and ability to handle highly technical challenges have reaffirmed our status as a top technology partner for BMW. As a result of our work, they now have a strong, user-centric toolset for best synthesizing and visualizing large data sets for building new business use cases and creating the technology that will define their brand over the next decade.
